NASHVILLE, Tenn., August 26, 2010 -- Local State Senator Bill Ketron said today that he has been informed by the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) that a $259,200 grant has been approved for Phase II of the Mt. Pleasant Community Walkway Project. Ketron said the grant is part of a comprehensive community effort to connect community facilities and encourage more pedestrian traffic in Tennessee.
“As sponsor of the legislation to provide more physical education in our schools, I am particularly pleased that we will receive this grant,” said Senator Ketron. “Walkways like ours in Mt. Pleasant encourage more citizens, especially our youth, to become active and appreciate outdoor activities. I congratulate our local officials for their role in this grant and look forward to seeing more area citizens enjoying this walkway after this project is complete.”
According to TDOT, Phase II will extend the walkway along Greenwood Street and First Avenue linking the city’s elementary, middle, and high schools with a nearby park and athletic field. The project will also connect several neighborhoods, allowing children and other residents to safely access schools and recreational areas. The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
